Group set up to look at the area's cultural celebrations

Mid and East Antrim Council has outlined progress on a Cultural Celebrations Working Group.

It was initially established in October to engage with identified bonfire builders within communities.

The group has proposed a number of actions, including measures to promote the legal disposal of tyres throughout the borough.

“No funding is to be made available where tyres are incorporated into a bonfire,” a report provided to members read.

Meanwhile, a questionnaire for councillors, MLAs and MPs the would give an “opportunity to contribute their views on the issue of cultural celebrations”, while further meetings are to be arranged with bonfire organisers.

A range of cultural education programmes could be arranged, to look at the history of bonfires and to provide training on running safe events.

The establishment of a wider statutory agency forum was also suggested.
