Guided walk through Strand dunes

Though behind the three miles of golden sand and the crashing waves of the Atlantic lies another side to this award winning destination – the sand dunes.

The dune system plays host to an amazing variety of plants and insect life, some of which is unique to this site. From hundreds of snails to day flying moths and brightly coloured butterflies, the dunes are like a different world with their own microclimate and a tranquillity that begs to be discovered and explored!

On Saturday, August 13 the National Trust is inviting the whole family to spend an afternoon roaming the dunes with one of its extremely knowledgeable guides to explore this unique ecosystem looking for the tracks of animals that call the dunes home as well as a host of other varieties of plant life, wildlife and insects.

The walk guarantees to show you a side of Portstewart Strand that most visitors don’t usually see. Hopefully you will explore, learn and see why the dunes are so important to us here at the National Trust.

The tour will start at 2pm and leaves from the Portstewart Strand visitor centre. The walk is approximately three miles and will take you along the beach and through the dunes. It will be a leisurely walk, however sensible footwear is necessary.
