Gwen honoured for her ‘outstanding contribution’ to charity

THE huge amount of charity work done by a Lisburn woman was recognised recently when she received a special award from the Northern Ireland Assembly.

War on Want volunteer Gwen McWilliams, 92, received the award for her, “outstanding contribution to international development”.

At a special ceremony held at parliament buildings in Stormont, Gwen received her award from the all-party group on International Development (APGID), which also launched a new international development strategy on the evening.

The great-grandmother of three said she was delighted to be honoured. “It was lovely to receive the award on behalf of all the volunteers at War and Want. They are a great bunch” Gwen said.

War on Want fights poverty in developing countries in partnership with people affected by globalisation. It campaigns for human rights and against the root causes of global poverty, inequality and injustice.
