Habitat for Humanity team heading to Ethiopia to build houses for poor

THE chaplain of the University of Ulster in Coleraine, Fr Raymond McCullagh, will lead a student team to Ethiopia in July to help build houses for impoverished families, working in partnership with Habitat for Humanity, the world’s largest poverty housing charity.

Since 2005 the University has been sending teams to different affiliates within Ethiopia, raising over £200,000.

The success of these teams resulted in an exciting new partnership between Habitat for Humanity Northern Ireland (HFHNI) and HFH in Ethiopia (HFHE).

Since then several teams from the Province were hosted by HFHE as part of their Global Village Programme.The partnership also works closely with local leprosy associations to guarantee houses for some of the most vulnerable people in African society.

HFHNI is a cross-community, Christian, self-build housing charity that builds simple, affordable homes in partnership with low-income families and volunteers.

The organisation is not just about building houses; it aims to empower individuals, restore hope and rebuild communities by building houses for ownership with people in need.

The work of Habitat for Humanity is only possible through the generosity of the general public. Over the past years many people and organisations from the Coleraine area have been most supportive.

These include the University of Ulster Students’ Union and Kelly’s nightclub, Portrush. Before Christmas Kelly’s staff collected enough money to build a house for a needy family in Ethiopia.

As part of our fundraising campaign a Gala Ball will be held in The Diamond Hall, University of Ulster, Coleraine, on Saturday, June 2.
