Had bought car previous week

Although he had insurance for his family vehicle a Banbridge man was not insured for a car he bought just a week before he was stopped by police.

Neill Smyth (33), Konver Heights, Banbridge, was fined £300 last Thursday at the local magistrates’ court for driving without insurance on February 14 this year.

He was also given six points and ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy.

The court heard he was stopped at a checkpoint on Rathfriland Street, Banbridge, and asked to produce his licence and insurance.

Smyth, who pleaded guilty himself in court, said he had an insurance policy for his family vehicle.

He explained that he had bought this vehicle the week previous and was getting it ready for the MOT which it did go through a couple of days later.

The defendant added that he now only had the family vehicle and had sold the other car on.
