John Irvine (31), whose address was given as Ardboe Drive, Lurgan, admitted unlawful possession of herbal cannabis and cannabis resin on February 24 this year.

The court heard that the drugs were discovered during a police search of a property.

Irvine admitted the drugs belonged to him.

A solicitor for the defendant said a very small amount of cannabis was involved and Irvine had one relevant conviction.

He explained that this was the defendant’s brother’s flat and Irvine frankly admitted the items were his and for his own use.

The solicitor said at the time of the offences Irvine was effectively homeless but had now got a house.

He said that a short sentence report from probation indicated he was suitable for community service.

District Judge, Mrs Bernie Kelly, said that given Irvine’s record for similar matters it merited a community based disposal.
