Hair cut will be in memory of brave Anna

Little Maya O’Hagan, a pupil at Carhill Integrated Primary School, had the idea of giving someone a present for her birthday, rather than receiving one.

So, the five year old has decided to donate her luscious locks to the Little Princess Trust, whilst at the same time raising money for the NI Cancer Fund for Children.

Speaking about her brave little daughter, Maya’s mum Gosia explained that the family have close links to the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children following the death of close relative, Anna McAllister, a former pupil of Loreto College.

Anna, who was just sixteen passed away in September 2014. Since then Anna’s friends and family members have been raising money for the vital work of the local charity.

Gosia, little Maya’s mum, who is originally from Poland, used to baby sit Anna, and met her husband through Anna’s family.

“Anna was a great girl.

“She inspired so many people,” said Gosia.

Speaking about her own daughter, Gosia went on: “Although Maya was very small when Anna was battling her illness, she is aware of how the charity works for local families.

“Maya may only be five, but she is a sensible little girl, and is very excited about getting her hair cut.”

“We have researched things, and we know that it costs in the region of £350 to make a wig from donated hair.

“The Little Princess Trust get at least one request every week for a new wig. Maya understands that her hair will be helping someone, so she’s pleased to be getting it cut. I am so proud of her.”

Maya will have her hair cut on Thursday, March 10 at her school.

“We felt it was important to get the whole community involved,” told the proud Mum.

“The school will be holding a fund raiser on the day - with a hair inspired theme.

“I think the idea is to have a ‘mad hair day’ so that all of the 65 children in the school will be involved in the efforts.”
