Half marathonwalk in tributeto late Elma

Over fifty people walked the 12 miles from Londonderry to the home of the late Elma mcKnight in Donemana recently in order to raise £4,810 for cancer care in her memory.

Elma, who was diagnosed with cancer care six years ago, helped organise the walk but sadly passed away last month before it was completed.

According to Gordon Monteith who was involved in the event: “The walk was carried out on May 23, in aid of Macmillan Cancer support.

“Over fifty walkers took part in the event.

“Sadly Elma didn’t live to see the end result of all the effort she made to ensure the walk was a success.

“We’d like to say a big thank you to all those who walked and collected money for the event.

“A great effort was made by everyone involved and it was a fitting tribute to the late Elma McKnight.”

The walk took place from Londonderry train station to Elma’s home in Allen Park on May 23.

Elma died on May 14, and was buried in Mountcastle cemetery after a service of thanksgiving in St James’ Parish Church on May 16.

Her chosen charity Macmillan believes that no one should face cancer alone.

It aims to provide support right from the moment someone’s diagnosed, through treatment and beyond.

The £4,810 raised in Elma’s memory will now be used to help fund nurses and therapists helping cancer sufferers through treatment; the experts on the end of the phone; the advisers telling people which benefits they’re entitled to; the volunteers giving sufferers a hand with the everyday things; the campaigners pushing for better cancer care; and the community supporting sufferers online, any time.
