Half of electric blankets inspected failed safety test

Members of the shows had been carried out in September and October in Ballycastle, Ballymoney and Coleraine.

A total of 119 blankets were tested with 79 failing the test.

The 79 were replaced with new electric blankets.The electric blankets were purchased in local towns and PHA provided the funding via the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council Home Accident Prevention Groups.

Members agreed that the exercise was very worthwhile and asked if it would be possible to run another event before the winter weather sets in.

It was agreed that officers would look into the possibility of running another session.It was also proposed by Alderman Frank Campbell that the Home Accident Prevention group be reinstated, seconded by Alderman William King.

This was also agreed.

Causeway Coast and Glens Council is being asked to participate in a £21,000-a-year ‘Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful’ campaign to inspire community pride in their local area.

Members of the Council’s Environmental Services Committee heard a presentation from Keep NI Beautiful Chief Executive Dr Ian Humphries at Tuesday’s meeting.

He said the new initiative would promote a ‘can do’ spirit to show that stopping littering and promoting community pride can have an impact on quality of life, tourism and jobs in the area.

Dr Humphries said that the media campaign would be measured using key performance indicators such as a reduction in litter.

There was widespread support for the campaign but members recommended that the proposal be brought to full Council for discussion.
