Hamilton hopes for society progress

CONSERVATIVE and Unionist candidate for the Westminster election Harry Hamilton has welcomed the news that the NI Executive is to step in to try and resolve the ongoing issue surrounding the Presbyterian Mutual Society (PMS).

Addressing the issue which has left many savers desperate Mr Hamilton said: “At his party conference last year our Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown said that his Government had ensured that not one UK saver had lost a penny – tell that to those people throughout Northern Ireland who have lost all their PMS savings.

“For months now the Ulster Unionist Party at the Assembly and the Conservative Party at Westminster have been lobbying the Government asking them to step in and help securing the same response for PMS savers as elsewhere in the UK.

"Only last week in the House of Commons Shadow Secretary of State. Owen Patterson, highlighted months of Labour Government inaction on the PMS.

“This week the Executive represented by the First and deputy First Minister met with the Prime Minister putting forward a proposal on how to move the issue forward – this must be welcomed and will be much needed relief for those who have been left without their savings.

“I am hopeful that this progress by the Executive will lead to a positive outcome for those savers who have felt let down by Brown’s Labour Government.”
