Hanged man had been dead for 'months'

IT is understood that a Polish man found hanged in a house at Church Street, Ahoghill, last week, may have been dead for up to two months.

Police say they do not suspect a crime and it is feared the 39-year-old man committed suicide.

His body was discovered last Wednesday.

A post-mortem examination has been carried out and a report will be prepared for the coroner, police have confirmed.

Ballymena Mayor Maurice Mills said he was “devastated” to hear of the tragic circumstances of the man’s death and that his demise had gone undetected for so long.

“It is remarkable that this wasn’t found out earlier,” he said.

“However, ethnic minorities can sometimes be overly seclusive and as a result of that what sometimes happens is that they are insulated from society, and, that is regretful.

“Of course we don’t know what this man’s situation was, he may have been under quite a bit of pressure, ” said Mr Mills.

Ahoghill Councillor, Alderman Roy Gillespie said he was saddened to learn of the death.

“I’m very sad to hear about this and I’m shocked at the length of time it has taken before this was made known,” he said.

“I would extend my sincere condolences to the family of this man,” added Ald. Gillespie.

Ivy Ridge of Ballymena Inter Ethnic Forum (BIEF) said they were “deeply saddened” by the man’s death.

And she said that BIEF were in the process of arranging a Polish funeral Mass for him.
