Happy 100th for Mary

A NEWBRIDGE lady is celebrating a very special milestone - her 100th birthday.

And to mark the occasion, Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness paid a visit to Mary Rogan, to congratulate her on reaching 100.

Martin was accompanied by Sinn Féin councillors Peter Bateson and Catherine Ellatar, Magherafelt council vice-chairperson.

When Mr McGuinness asked what she felt was the secret of a long life Mary said ‘good food and good friends’.

Mary was a keen camogie player in her youth and often travelled long distances on her bicycle to play matches at clubs as far away as Ballinascreen.

The Deputy First Minister said to reach 100 years of age is a fantastic achievement and Mary is certainly still going strong.

“She tells me that she loves to read and she watches the news to keep her up to date on what’s going on in the world which I’m sure she can understand better than many of us given the wisdom granted by her years.

“I wish her continued good health and I hope that I will be back to visit her again soon,” he added.
