The team took part in a Movember-style challenge by growing out their facial hair in aid of Friends of the Cancer Centre.

The hair-raising efforts culminated in a close shave last Wednesday morning at Charisma Turkish Barbers on Antrim Street.

A total of 13 men involved with the Ellis Street centre are taking part in the venture, explained Thomas Haighton from Hawthorns.

“Over the past few years we in Hawthorns have all had family, friends and one of our clients affected by cancer,” he added.

“We know that Friends of the Cancer Centre do a wonderful job supporting not only those with cancer but their family and loved ones.”

The novel fundraiser has attracted a generous response from local people, with almost £600 collected so far through online donations site JustGiving.

“We [initially] set a target of £100 as we knew this would help towards supporting people affected.

“All of us here in Hawthorns are overwhelmed by the generosity of our family, friends and the community who have shown their support by giving us donations,” Thomas said.
