THERE will be “visible and proactive” policing of Saturday’s cup final match between Coleraine and Crusaders being held at Ballymena Showgrounds, the PSNI has confirmed.

It is understood that this is a bid to prevent a repeat of last September when trouble flared in the town after a match between Coleraine and Ballymena United.

On that occasion, police made a number of arrests after a group of up to 40 alleged Coleraine fans went on the rampage through the town centre and surrounding area.

Commenting on this Saturday’s Irn Bru League Cup final at the Showgrounds, Inspector John Allen of Ballymena PSNI confirmed: “A risk assessment has been performed for this match and the appropriate resources will be deployed.

Police will be visible and proactive in the policing of this match,” he said.
