Heading off to South Africa

THREE Lurgan men are bound for one of the poorest parts of South Africa.

Malachy Toman and his sons Ruairi and Neill are taking part in the Niall Mellon Township Trust, which operates a house building programme for impoverished families living in the townships of South Africa.

Each year the charity organizes a Building Blitz comprised of Irish volunteers who raise funds to travel to South Africa to build houses for families in the townships.

This year will see 750 volunteers from all parts of Ireland embarking on the Building Blitz

Niall Mellon, the Trust’s founder said: “It is just wonderful to see the increase in the number of volunteers coming from the North of Ireland. The support throughout the country hasn’t wained despite our turbulent times, and I think 2010 sees us all reflecting on the real issues of life and keeping us focussed.

"I am heartened at the tremendous response we are having to the November blitz, and look forward to another very rewarding week out in Wallacedene.”
