The British Heart Foundation recently revealed that heart disease is the single biggest killer in Northern Ireland and that residents in the Ballymoney area are more than three times more likely to die from coronary heart disease anywhere else in the UK.

Responding to the research, Loughgiel Community Association hopes to provide a new health facility that will assist in the fight against heart disease, diabetes, childhood obesity and generally improve the lives of local people.

Angela O’Hagan, Loughgiel Community Association commented, “Our aim is to help motivate and encourage physical fitness, improve heart and lung conditions, and promote better bone and joint health. When renovations are complete it will allow us to hold spin classes, circuit training and many other fitness classes in conjunction with our existing gym.”

Victoria Graham from RES said: “RES is delighted to be able to support the local community in this way. The new facility will provide a range of services for all ages and will provide a better quality of life by the health benefits gained.”

It is hoped that work will commence on the new facility later this year.
