Healthy eating on the menu at local eateries

THE Environmental Health Department at Coleraine Borough Council hosted a certificate presentation at Cloonavin last week for local restuaranters and café owners who recently completed the Level 2 Award in Healthier Foods and Special Diets.

The training programme covered various aspects of nutrition and health including information and research on links between diet and health, dietary recommendations and catering in schools, hospitals and care homes.

The course also outlined tips for healthy diets and explained the recommended proportion of each food group to be eaten in a diet, illustrated through the ‘eat well’ plate indicator.

Debbie Keys, Council’s Health and Wellbeing Officer, was delighted by the high level of interest shown by local businesses.

She said: “Council hope that all of those who completed our course will endeavour to use their newly acquired skills and knowledge to prepare healthy choices in their workplace, and continue to promote health and wellbeing across the Borough.

“Eating out is extremely popular on the North Coast and the efforts of local businesses to provide nutritious and well balanced meals will assist in tackling obesity in Northern Ireland.”
