Healthy living is promoted at Larne Grammar

Pupils and teachers at Larne Grammar School have enjoyed in a host of fun activities as part of Health Promotion week.

In a bid to encourage a more healthy lifestyle, events such a tug of war, dance contest and football tournament were organised throughout the week.

Walking was promoted with a campaign aimed at getting pupils to walk to school. Meanwhile, the canteen served up a healthy menu with a farming twist.

Senior pupils researched and produced articles for the school’s website, focussing on teenage stress and depression, and they organised a drop in session where pupils could come for a chat. Minds were also given a hearty work out in the school-wide farming fortunes game show.

Men’s health was the focus when a Turkish barber came to give tips on shaving and skin care and staff were on hand to highlight concerns about male cancers.

A well-attended health event for girls was also staged to focus on beauty, skin care and hair.

The need to exercise and social health was emphasised in many entertaining ways, including a tug of war contest, tractor racing and a football competition. The teacher pupil dance-off was well supported and ended in a victory for the staff.

Many pupils also wore their wellies and paid a pound each so the school could start saving for a second defibrillator.

Shopping trolleys also did the rounds as the school tried to stockpile food to donate to Larne foodbank.

Teacher Hilary Pyper said: “It was a hectic week organised by an inspired team of teachers and pupils and we hope that in some way touched the lives of every student in a positive way.”
