Heart of city to feature musical mix

THE heart of Londonderry will become a musical melting pot on Friday (September 23) as the city gets into the spirit of Culture Night.

From Flamenco to Traditional, Dance Music to Drumming, Soul to Singer Songwriters; an outdoor stage at Guildhall Square will be a platform for a host of local and visiting artists and groups to entertain the crowds in the city centre.

Among the highlights will be popular local band John Deery and the Heads at 3pm, renowned singer-songwriter Paul Casey at 3.30pm and the international sound of Balkan Alien Sound at 8pm.

And there will be music available all across the city with the McCafferty School Singers, performing in the Millennium Forum at 7pm, Musical Theatre for Youth showcase performances by pupils from Foyleview School and internationally renowned Flamenco guitarist playing Café Del Mundo from 7pm to 9pm.

The Guildhall Square will play host to a range of diverse musical performances thanks to the Greater Shantallow Community Arts who have really pushed the boat out and organised a fantastic array of musical free live musical performances.

Entitled Art Reaching Communities, this cultural celebration of music will celebrate the very best music and dance performance the city has to offer.

Encouraging people to come along, Ollie Green from Greater Shantallow Community Arts said he was delighted to be part of Culture night celebrations. “It’s a great opportunity to see local talent in the heart of the city. The music starts at 5pm and continues right through to 10pm and promises to be really enjoyable,” he said.

Culture Night takes place on Friday September 23rd and most events are free. Full listings and information on events is available at http://www.derrycity.gov.uk/culturenights or by contacting Derry City Council Development Department on 02871 365151.
