Heartbeat Trek 2012

A BIG-HEARTED Dunfries man, who has made Drumahoe his ‘home’, will launch his ‘Heartbeat Trek 2012’ this Monday in aid of Chest Heart and Stroke.

Scott Darroch, who lives on Fincairn Road came up with the idea for the challenge in memory of his father, David, who passed away due to a heart-related illnes on December 27 six years ago. He is hoping that 150 people, or more, will choose to take part in the Trek, which can be completed in a variety of ways depending on people’s abilities, ages and fitness levels.

Having done previous fundraising walks for Chest Heart and Stroke, Scott said he wanted to start an annual walk or run to give people an opportunity to remember family or friends who had died from a heart or stroke related illness, a well as encouraging people to opt for a healthy way to do something positive for charity.

To that end the Heartbeat Trek 2012 will be launched on Monday at the Waterfoot Hotel, and the event itself will take place on June 9, with registration for the event at the Waterfoot Hotel at 10am.

“This trek is in memory of my father, David Darroch, as well as for the Dunn family who are also remembering the death of a loved one, Robert Dunn, and all proceeds from it will be donated to NI Chest Heart and Stroke,” said Scott.

The walk/run is graded so that groups or individuals can cover six miles, 12 mines or 18 miles taking in the city’s bridges on a six-mile route, and can be completed in full or in part by participants, who can also take part as relay teams. The relay option open the event to schools and younger participants as well as older people who might not be able for a longer walk, but who want to do their bit for charity.

“I am hoping that by offering a range of options for taking part that people of all ability ranges will take part in the Trek,” said Scott.
