“I would like to extend my sincerest condolences to Ben’s family, his friends and his fellow pupils at Carrickfergus Grammar. His death is heartbreaking for those closest to him, but his loss, at such a young age, will be felt in the rugby fraternity and across the wider world of sport.”

A former Acorn Integrated Primary School pupil, the 14-year was a popular figure at Carrick Grammar, where staff and children have been receiving counselling this week.

Principal Kieran Mulvenna stated: “The Board of Governors, staff and pupils at Carrickfergus Grammar School extend their heartfelt condolences to the family of Ben Robinson, who has lost his life in the Royal Victoria Hospital after collapsing during a Medallion Shield rugby match here at the school on Saturday morning.

“I know I speak for all who knew Ben when I say he was a vivacious and highly popular pupil with a broad smile and a great sense of humour. Ben brought heart to everything he did and that was very evident in how well he played for the school on Saturday morning. His parents have every right to be deeply proud of him.

“Ben’s loss will obviously be felt keenly by many, many pupils throughout the school, but most especially his older sister, Holly, whom we shall all be doing our utmost to support.

“We have arranged for counselling to be made available and our pastoral care team will make it their priority to help pupils through these tragic days and the weeks and months beyond.”

The principal added that a book of condolence would be opened and the school’s production of ‘My Fair Lady’, scheduled for next week, was being postponed as a mark of respect.

Further tribute came from the Ulster Branch of the Irish Rugby Football Union: “The heartfelt condolences of the IRFU Ulster Branch and the entire rugby fraternity are extended to Ben’s parents, family and all at Carrickfergus Grammar School at this time.”

It is the second rugby-related tragedy at the school in four months. Referee Bill Jennings (66) collapsed and died while officiating at a match in October.

In the interests of transfer pupils, open night at Carrick Grammar School will go ahead this evening (Thursday).
