Heavy downpours cause some of Lisburn’s worst ever flooding

THE Lisburn area has suffered some of its worst ever flooding after a series of heavy downpours on Wednesday night.

Hundreds of homeowners had to battle to keep water out of their homes as the rain left roads impassable.

Areas particularly affected included Ballymacash, Pond Park, Derriaghy and Dunmurry.

A landslide in the Brokerstown Road area reduced traffic to one lane. Other roads reduced to one lane included Belsize Road, North Lisburn Feeder Road and Derriaghy Road. The Mullaghcarton Road was blocked due to debris and flooding.

By Thursday morning the following roads were still affected:

Stewartstown Road is closed at Twinbrook Road.

Belsize Road is closed at Milltown estate.

Brokerstown Road is down to one lane due to a landslide.

Mullaghcarton Road is blocked as a bank has collapsed due to flooding.

A manhole cover has lifted in Summerhill Road, Dunmurry, opposite Chestnutt Park.

The Old Golf Course Road in Dunmurry is only passable with extreme care.

Other roads reduced to one lane in Lisburn include the North Lisburn Feeder Road and Derriaghy Road.

Commenting on Facebook Lisburn Mayor, Alderman William Leathem said: “Terrible for the people to have their homes flooded. The Council has staff out assisting the River agency with sand bags.”

He continued: “So we now have sandbags at the ready, everyone is out on the street preparing for the next downpour.”

On lady who lives at Thaxton Village said she had never seen rain like it. “The builders have been here for the last hour, building trenches to allow the water to drain away and opening manholes and my partner is away to the neighbours to help them to rescue as much furniture as possible.”

There will be full reports and pictures of the floods in today’s Ulster Star which is available this afternoon.
