Heavy rain doesn’t dampen Jubilee fun in Gleno

Despite the mist and heavy showers, more than 230 people turned up for the Gleno Jubilee street party held at the top of the main street.

Completely funded by Larne Borough Council‘s jubilee grant, the local community rallied round and put on a great show, with around six local groups participating in the event.

A tea dance in the Orange Hall with homemade cupcakes and tea quickly changed into a mini concert as many found refuge from the rain. Mervyn Robinson and Country Sounds kept the tempo just right as all ages came together to share the music, home baking and yarn, delivering the best result for any community event – good chat and good relations.

Raloo Ramblers walking group participated by navigating their walk to join in with the community celebrations. Gleno WI provided a craft exhibition displaying their homespun talents and in return gained some interest in new membership. Gleno YFC and Orangemen kindly allowed use of the halls which were gratefully received in the poor weather conditions. Gleno Parish Church provided a baptismal register for those interested in local history.

Some big names were also present at the street party. Sainsbury’s recipe columnist to the Larne Times, Arlene Thompson, provided a cookery demonstration and sampling session. Cooking with all-Northern Ireland produce, Arlene cooked up a regal treat with her Jersey Royal potatoes and Jubilee Chicken.

National Trust provided two wardens who were also keen to join in with the fun, providing nature’s own materials to make five-star bug homes with the children. Responsible for the management of Gleno waterfalls, the National Trust is very keen to have a presence at such community events.

Gleno Valley Community Associaton would like to thank everyone who participated and attended the event and Larne Borough Council for their continued support.

The group recently joined the Rural Community Network who provided the funding for a community website www.glenocommunity.ruralcommunitynetwork.org
