Help feed those in need

WITH many struggling to put food on the table, Lurgan’s Tesco is launching a food collection for Christmas.

The Help Feed People in Need has been launched with the help of food charity FareShare and Foodbanks charity the Trussell Trust.

Staff members with Trust and Fareshare volunteers as well as retired Tesco staff will be on hand to help customers who will be given special shopping lists to encourage them to buy everyday food items like cereals, rice, instant coffee, tinned food and sauces.

Collections will take place between 9am – 6pm in all Tesco stores on December 1 and 2 helping to provide much needed food for hundreds of thousands of people this Christmas.

Tesco will be utilising their delivery network by transporting food donations to FareShare’s 17 regional depots while Tesco colleagues will be holding their own collections at Tesco offices across the UK.

Tesco is the first supermarket to partner nationally with Trussell Trust foodbanks and this pioneering appeal will be the first nationwide food collection for the charity.

The retailer will be topping up total donations by 30 per cent and will also be providing funding to both organisations to help them build on the vital work they do helping people in communities across the country.

This comes after the recent opening of Craigavon Area Food Bank

The Lightwell Centre, formerly Drumgor Community Centre is staffed by volunteers and the food bank is open from 1pm to 3pm on a Monday, 6pm to 8pm on a Wednesday and 12 noon to 2pm on a Friday. During these times, people can come with a food referral form and receive three days worth of nonperishable food. They also have the opportunity to have coffee and a signposting service is provided to various support organisations.
