Helping NSPCC is real ‘satisfaction’ for Edith

Ballybogey woman Edith Trainor says that she would ‘very much’ encourage anyone with time to spare to consider volunteering with ChildLine, the NSPCC’s free, confidential helpline dedicated to children and young people.

Speaking ahead of Volunteer Week (1-7 June), Edith – a mother of four and grandmother of two - encouraged others to get involved in supporting the NSPCC’s vital local services for children and families: “I have been a ChildLine counsellor for 14 months now, having been asked by a friend to go to an information evening, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I decided then that it was something I would like to do.

“The calls we received can be absolutely anything, from a young person wanting you to hear them sing, to someone on the point of taking their own life. I have become much more aware of the issues young people are facing today. I didn’t realise how common self-harming is, and how many people need somewhere like ChildLine to turn to.”

Recounting how she counselled a young person who was intent on taking her own life, but who ended the call feeling “much better and more focused on the good things in her life”, Edith said: “I get an amazing feeling of satisfaction when I know I have made a difference to a young person’s life. When you realise how limited the options are for young people searching for help, and how ChildLine supports them through very difficult situations, it explains your reasons for being there.” For information visit www.nspcc.org.uk/getinvolved, or call 028 90 351135.
