Last week Lesley had her handbag stolen whilst in a shop in the city centre. She lost a substantial amount of money, as well as a lot of sentimental possessions.

She was understandably devastated and was dreading a very unhappy Christmas.

However, Jeff, a friend of her niece, who had never even met Lesley, took it upon himself to bring some festive spirit back to the downhearted woman.

He took to the streets and asked local businesses to donate something to make up for what had been stolen.

Jeff may be known to many as a talented footballer, who was scouted to train with Everton in the 1990s.

This week he handed over the proceeds to Lesley, who said she was overwhelmed by his generosity.

“This guy I don’t even know took it upon himself to help me,” explained Lesley. “I was so overwhelmed.

“It was going to be a very dismal Christmas and for someone to do this is an extreme act of kindness.

“He really is a true hero,” she added.

Lesley would also like to thank all the shops and businesses that responded to Jeff’s request, including Tesco, the Tap Room in Hilden, Divine Hair and Beauty, Hilden Pharmacy, McCrum’s Bar, V Doran and Sons Butchers, Bad Ass Burrito and the Spar in Grand Street.
