Hezlett kids givenno smoking advice

P7 pupils of Hezlett Primary School, Castlerock, have been given an early wake-up call on what serious damage can be caused by smoking to respiratory health.

As well as a DVD pin-pointing the dangers of smokingRespiratory Nurse Jackie Cochrane also used a sponge and a tar-like substance to graphically illustrate what smoking does to lung health.

Accompanying Jackie at Hezlett Primary School was Breathe Easy Causeway Vice-Chairman, Sam Kelly.

Group Chairperson, Marie Hegarty, said: “This programme of workshops for primary schools is designed especially to hammer-home the point that prevention is better than cure.

“If we can get our message across to people at an early age hopefully many will not start to smoke. We are well aware that smoking is not the only cause of lung disease.

“Many respiratory patients never smoked in their lives. What we are saying is that smoking is a major contributory factor to serious lung disease.”

Jackie’s instructive talk is all part of a new initiative launched by Breathe Easy Causeway, the local subsidiary of the British Lung Foundation, to help make young people more aware of the dangers of smoking.
