COLERAINE’S Olympic medallists will fly home by helicopter to a heroes’ welcome this Wednesday, The Coleraine Times can reveal.

Alan Campbell and brothers, Richard and Peter Chambers will be greeted at Bann Rowing Club at 1pm.

And after spending time with club members and families, the Olympic heroes will walk the short distance into Coleraine town centre where an outdoor celebration event will take place from 3pm.

Silver medallists Richard and Peter and bronze medalist Alan will fly into Coleraine from Holywood in a helicopter in the morning.

They will then be transported to their homes by BMW before attending an informal buffet lunch in their honour at the Water Margin.

Following lunch, the boys will be greeted at Bann by club captain Keith Leighton, president Bobby Platt MBE and vice-captain Stephen Smyth.

After the Bann club reception the mayor, councillor Sam Cole will welcome the trio home before escorting them along Bridge Street to the Town Hall where a public celebration will be staged at 3pm to the sound of the Chariots of Fire theme.

BBC Radio Ulster’s Alan Simpson will host his afternoon programme from the event which will feature interviews with the returning heroes.

The rowers and their families will also be special guests later in the afternoon at the mayor’s parlour in Cloonavin where they will sign the visitors’ book and be greeted by councillors.
