High rates blamed for fashion boutique closure

A FASHION boutique in Lisburn is set to close its doors for good after the owner said high rates and the VAT increase had left him with no other option.

Editor, located in Lisburn Square, opened at the end of 2009 and while it was a hit with local fashionistas the firm has recently struggled to survive.

A spokesman for the business explained that one of the main reasons for the shop having to close is the rates.

He said: “The rates are three times the cost of other places in the province. This together with the fact that a small independent retailer like us can’t adjust our prices to meet the VAT increase, is a killer. It just doesn’t make sense and we have taken a real beating.”

When Editor opened it was widely seen as a welcome addition to the city offering women a new concept in style, catering for the 18-35 age group. The name was chosen to create a magazine vibe which was reflected throughout the store.

At the time the firm said: “Just as magazines constantly change we keep abreast of evolving fashions so we highlight key looks on a weekly basis, showing our customers how to be ‘on trend’ with our affordable, individual and quirky clothes.”

Unfortunately the demand for high fashion couldn’t keep up with the economic downturn.
