The University DEA representative was unveiled as one of the party’s new recruits last week.

Cllr Hill, who failed to win a seat on the new Antrim and Newtownabbey Council, quit the DUP earlier this month after the party initiated disciplinary proceedings against him for publicly criticising South Antrim MP William McCrea.

Commenting on his decision to join UKIP, he said: “I have found UKIP a breath of fresh air, and a very welcoming party to people from all backgrounds. UKIP is a straight talking party with common sense that is willing to face up to the tough issues facing society, such as uncontrolled immigration, and the costs and the constraints of EU membership; issues that the older parties try to dodge.

“I am proud to say that I now belong to the UKIP family, and I look forward to playing my part in helping the party grow, not only here in Newtownabbey, but throughout Northern Ireland and the whole of the United Kingdom.”

Welcoming Cllr Hill to the party, UKIP leader in Northern Ireland, David McNarry MLA said: “Robert will be a tremendous addition to our ever-growing team. We are pleased that he has chosen UKIP as his home. Like others before him, Robert has joined the party that dictates the narrative in modern-day politics throughout the United Kingdom.”
