Hills Partnership invites more people to take a walk in the park

The Belfast Hills Partnership has spent more than £30,000 on improving local access to Cave Hill Country Park in a drive to create more quality walking routes.

Significant improvements have been made to the path between McArt’s Fort and Hazelwood, costing £30,000. The entrance to the park at Horseshoe Bend has benefitted from £4,000 worth of improvements, and the path at the limestone quarry, from where people can walk west to Ballyaghagan near the Upper Hightown Road, has also been upgraded.

The latest works, which started in spring and finished last month, are part of a major £120,000 investment aimed at promoting sustainable recreation within the Belfast Hills and enticing more people to use and enjoy the scenic, upland area without damaging the natural landscape.

The initiative forms part of a wider Heritage Lottery-funded landscape partnership scheme that seeks to reconnect local communities with the hills that dominate Belfast and straddle Lisburn, Antrim and Newtownabbey.

David Scott, Belfast Hills landscape project officer, said: “These paths will entice more people into the Belfast Hills to make the best of what these public sites have to offer in terms wildlife, views, health and wellbeing, and trails to walk along.”
