Hillsborough Horticultural Society learn how to make their greenhouse work

HILLSBOROUGH: With Spring just around the corner, getting the best from your greenhouse was the theme of the meeting of Hillsborough Horticultural Society held on January 25 in Hillsborough Village Centre.

Richard Gray, Plant Manager at Dobbies, dealt comprehensively with all aspects of greenhouse gardening. He spoke about the different types of greenhouse and how to achieve good environmental control.

Richard emphasised the need to have a plan for sowings throughout the year. Taking each month in turn, he explained what gardeners should be doing in the greenhouse to achieve optimum results. Not only did he cover fruit and vegetables but he also described how to achieve best results with flowers, herbs, tomatoes and many other plants. The importance of good ventilation, regular watering and meticulous cleanliness was particularly emphasised.

The next meeting of the Society on Wednesday February 29 will be a BBC recording of the popular ‘Gardeners Corner Roadshow’.
