Hillsborough park access plans welcomed

LAGAN Valley MLA Paul Givan and Downshire Councillor Paul Stewart have welcomed the news that Forest Service has identified a suitable pedestrian access to Hillsborough Forest from the Ballynahinch Road.

Mr Givan believes this decision will be beneficial for a number of reasons. He said: “I have recently learned that Forest Service has sought to open a new access point to Hillsborough Forest through which pedestrians from the Ballynahinch Road can enter. Presently there is a gateway situated opposite Governors Gate, development which has raised issues around unauthorised parking and a poor crossing point. The lack of footpaths also hindered those who wished to use this entrance as an access point.

“In order to accommodate the needs of local residents I am pleased that Forest Service has made provision for a new entrance into the walled forest park. At present Forest Service is working closely with Roads Service and Northern Ireland Electricity to progress these plans. A new entrance at this location will greatly benefit residents from a number of developments at this end of Hillsborough who wish to enter the forest. It will greatly reduce the distance that many will have to travel when opened as an official entrance into the forest.”

Mr Stewart agreed. He said: “These recent developments are positive for the many residents from the Ballynahinch Road who use the forest facility for leisure purposes. Added provision of footpaths and a safer crossing point will ensure that this new entrance will act as a safeguard for residents which also increasing accessibility for those with prams or pushchairs.”
