Historical plaque scheme re-launched

Launched in 1989, Ballymena Borough Council Historical Plaque Scheme was instigated to draw attention to significant local heritage.

To date 45 plaques have been erected under the Scheme, examples include a plaque commemorating local nineteenth century poet, David Herbison, and a plaque on the site of Ballymena Castle, built by local landlords, the Adairs.

In 2012 Ballymena Borough Council Historical Plaque Scheme Selection Panel was established, tasked with reviewing the current scheme and to create a more inclusive nomination process.

Re-launching the Scheme, Councillor John Carson, Chairman of the Historical Plaque Scheme Selection Panel, said: “We are very proud of our great Borough and we want to encourage nominations from local people of buildings, events or people of renown who have made a lasting contribution to the area.”

Members of the public are now invited to propose potential nominees using the official Council Nomination Form.
