Historical society granted Great War project funding

The funding was secured through the EU’s Programme for Peace and Reconciliation (PEACE III) which is managed by the Special EU Programmes Body.

Over the next year, through a series of talks and educational excursions, the project will look at the Loughshore and its people’s involvement in the Great War.

Then, in November 2013 members of the Historical Association and the local community plan to visit the war graves in France and Belgium. The group plan to create a lasting legacy by planting a ‘Peace Tree’ in the local area to remember those who left the shores of Lough Neagh to fight in the battlefields of World War One.

Ballinderry Historical Association welcomed the great news. A spokesperson for the group said: “The group feel that there is so much about this defining event in history that people from this area do not know about and we believe that now is the time to discover it. Men from the Loughshore left their homes and loved ones to go and fight in the battlefields of France and Belgium. They want to tell their stories and remember their bravery.”
