Members of the Derry City and Strabane District Council held the inaugural Planning meeting this week in which councillors were able to make determinations in relation to planning applications for the first time in over 40 years.

The new Council will be responsible for the processing of all planning applications in the Council area, excluding applications which are considered to be regionally significant which will continue to be assessed by the Department of the Environment.

Former DOE staff have now transferred to Derry City and Strabane District Council.

The successful inaugural meeting demonstrated a seamless transition of Planning Services for the new Council as a result of Local Government Reform.

Chief Executive John Kelpie said: “This is a reflection of the huge effort in relation to capacity building work to date by both members and officers of the new Derry City and Strabane District Council during the shadow period.

“The purpose of the capacity building was to ensure stakeholders that the planning process would see minimal disruption to their regular service and I believe this was successfully demonstrated today.”

Planning Committee meetings will take place on the first Wednesday of each month and members of the public are encouraged to attend. The Planning Committee meetings will be alternated on a monthly basis between the Guildhall Chamber and Strabane offices.

The May 12 meeting will take place in the Derry Road chamber of Derry City and Strabane District Council.
