Hit officer in Lurgan as he pulled his arm back

After failing to connect with a punch he threw at a man a 26-year-old struck a police officer as he pulled his arm back.

Francis Hughes, Drumbeg, Craigavon, admitted disorderly behaviour, assault on police and resisting police on July 26 this year.

The local magistrates’ court heard last Friday that at 1.30am police were dealing with an altercation in Edward Street, Lurgan.

The defendant ran towards a male with his right hand raised, his fist clenched and he was shouting aggressively.

He attempted to punch the male but failed to connect and as his arm went backwards he struck a police officer causing redness and swelling to her cheek.

A defence barrister said alcohol was involved and Hughes knew his actions were stupid.

District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, adjourned the case until October 16 for a short sentence report to see if Hughes was suitable for community service.
