Hogg appointed chair of DUP Young Democrats branch

NEWTOWNABBEY councillor Thomas Hogg has been appointed chairman of the newly formed Young Democrats branch of the North Belfast DUP Association.

The group for young people aged between 14 and 30 was launched at an event in Belfast City Hall.

Joining councillor Hogg at the launch were north Belfast DUP MLAs Nelson McCausland and William Humphrey and local fellow DUP councillors Gareth McKee and Guy Spence.

Councillor Hogg said: “We have had an encouraging start with 18 members already joining this new Young Democrats’ group.

“The group will be meeting on a monthly basis and we are planning a mixture of social and formal events, including guest speakers and visits.

“We have already enjoyed a guided tour of Belfast City Hall and a barbecue social evening. Our next meeting will include some MLAs addressing us on their work at Stormont and in their constituencies.

“We welcome others wishing to join the group and we are expecting a steady increase in numbers.”

North Belfast MLA Nelson McCausland welcomed the formation of the new group, he added: “It is important to provide an opportunity for young people to develop their interest in politics along with other similarly-minded young people.

“It is encouraging to see the number of young people already attending the Young Democrats and I am confident that this number will continue to grow.”
