Holiday at home event

AN event to promote holidays at home is being staged this weekend.

Craigavon’s Holiday at Home event on Saturday will help local people planning a ‘stay-cation’ in Northern Ireland this year explore the range of activities available in and around Craigavon.

Figures released by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB) show that during 2009, the total number of trips taken by Northern Ireland residents at home grew by over one third (+34%) compared to the previous year.

This trend has continued into 2010, as figures show the number of trips taken by Northern Ireland residents have increased by a massive 44% when compared to January-February 2009. As a result, the total spend for January and February has doubled, generating an impressive 30million for the local economy.

Alderman Sydney Anderson Chair of the Development Committee at Craigavon Borough Council said: “We would be delighted to show local people from here in Craigavon what we have to offer. The Holiday at Home Event is a day trip in itself with lots of free fun things to do for all the family. With activities in the area for all budgets it is the perfect time for parents to start looking at ideas for a fun packed summer.

“Here on the shores of Lough Neagh we have one of only two outdoor artificial ski slopes in Ireland, 18 hole golf courses, a watersports centre, Oxford Island National Nature Reserve, a rare breeds farm, motorsport centre and many, many other wonderful attractions.

"Representatives from countless fantastic facilities and organisations in and around Craigavon will be at the Holiday at Home event on Saturday to remind local people or introduce them to Craigavon as a tourist destination.
