Holocaust events in east Antrim

MORE than 75 people from Carrickfergus, Antrim, and Newtownabbey gathered at Mossley Mill to mark Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) 2011.

The Remembrance evening, held on Tuesday of last week, was organised by the CAN PEACE III Partnership and was the first annual HMD event for the area.

Councillor Stephen Nicholl, Chair of the CAN PEACE III Partnership Chair said: “It is very important that we continue to remember those whose lives were lost or permanently scared during this time. The theme for 2011, Untold Stories, challenges us all to listen to the told and untold stories of survivors, consider our own actions and ensure that we all work together to create a society where differences are celebrated.”

Carly Whyborn, Chief Executive Officer of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust added: “We have been overwhelmed by the interest and support shown in the CAN area. Holocaust Memorial Day gives us the opportunity to reflect on the Holocaust and on more recent genocides that raise similar issues.”

Carrick Council hosted a screening of the film ‘Life is Beautiful’ in the Civic Centre on Friday. Guests were addressed by the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Eric Ferguson.
