A NEW history course aimed at explaining the Home Rule period is being staged in the Larne area.

Magheramorne Old Orange Hall will be the venue for the ‘Educating Ourselves’ course, which is being piloted by the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland.

The course has been written by the Order’s Director of Services, Dr David Hume, and is to be made available to Orange lodges and community groups from November.

The pilot course will bring the Educating Ourselves programme, which has proved highly successful in other areas, to the Larne area for the first time, and the new course aims to build on the interest raised around the centenary of the Ulster Covenant. It will use powerpoint presentation and study of materials from the period.

The course will be held over four nights and will include focus on the Ulster Covenant of 1912, the Ulster Volunteer Force and 1914 gun-running, the Battle of the Somme and Easter Rising in Dublin, both in 1916, and the partition of Ireland.

The course starts next Wednesday evening, October 17 at 7.30pm, and will take place over the following three weeks on Tuesday evenings.

Cost will be £3.50 per night or £12 for all four evenings.

Anyone interested should come along next Wednesday evening at 7.30pm or phone 0791 2212737.

The Educating Ourselves programme started with the aim of exploring the history of the Orange tradition in Ireland and beyond and courses have been run in both Northern Ireland and the Republic.
