Lukasz Obiedzinski, 31, who has an address at Moore Street in the town, was jailed for four months at East Tyrone Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

Police reported approaching the defendant as he was acting suspiciously outside a building in Fiddes Court on July 10th, tampering with the door.

He told them that he had been homeless for eight days and that he wished to be arrested. He then attempted to strike a window with his elbow and punched one officer, sticking his fingers in his right eye.

Obiedzinski stated that all his documents had been stolen and in his desperation he had attempted to gain entry to sleep in the house.

“He had been working since coming to N. Ireland but due to a fracture of his leg he had lost that job and things had spiralled out of control,” said Mr Blaine Nugent, defending.

“In his predicament he didn’t know how to deal with this.”

Handing down a two month sentence, District Judge John Meehan also activated a suspended prison sentence giving a total of four months in prison.

“There is no way to justify an assault on a police officer doing his duty. It is just and proper to deal with this... it is the most serious aspect.”

He also imposed a £25 offender’s levy.
