The event on April 14 is “Looking Back: Context and Legacy of Ireland v UK”.

At this event, the Hooded Men will give their own accounts of the ill-treatment they were subjected to and its repercussions.

It features contributions by academics, NGO representatives, and a representative of the NI Human Rights Commission, on the case as it relates to counter-terrorism and the right not to be subjected to torture and inhuman and degrading treatment and punishment.

Hosted jointly by King’s College London and Queen’s University Belfast, the main organisers are Natasha Simonsen of King’s College London and Natasa Mavronicola. Natasha Simonsen’s research concerns the difference between torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment in international law.

Ms Mavronicola’s research concerns the right protected under Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which provides that ‘No one shall be subjected to torture or to inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment’ and its absolute character;

Natasa Mavronicola has a book forthcoming on the subject (http://www.hartpub.co.uk/BookDetails.aspx?ISBN=9781509902996).

Updates on the event can be found by following the QUB Human Rights Centre and the KCL National Security Research and Policy Initiative on Twitter.
