Hooked on painting

A Glengormley housewife was hooked on painting in March 1988.

Frances Leathem started painting to ease the boredom of accompanying her husband on his fishing trips.

He bought her a set of watercolours and within a year she was a big catch in local painting circles.

Some of her work was on display in the Ulster Bank branch on Farmley Road. One third of the proceeds raised at the exhibition, which was her second major exhibition, were to go to charity.

She said: “My husband bought me a set of watercolours to keep me quiet when I went fishing with him. What started out as a hobby has turned into something else, as I’ve already had a few orders.”
