Horticulture student Caroline awarded prestiguous scholarship

Horticulture student Caroline Power, who is working at Hillsborough Castle, has been awarded Student Scholarships of £1,000 by the David Colegrave Foundation (DCF).

Caroline, together with fellow student Emma McFarline who also received a scholarship, is studying for a Foundation Degree in Horticulture at College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) at the Greenmount Campus in County Antrim.

Caroline, who is interested in plant identification and plant science, and also working for Historic Royal Palaces - Hillsborough Castle as a Skilled Gardener says, “I am delighted to be a receiver of the DCF Student Scholarship. This scholarship will provide me with not only financial support to help fund my studies but also an exciting opportunity to explore equipment possibilities for my investigative project in production horticulture. I would like to thank the David Colegrave Foundation for their support and consideration and encourage other horticulture students to apply for a scholarship.”

Emma, who is interested in organic growing methods, sustainability and hydroponics, and also a volunteer gardener at the National Trust, says, “I am so grateful to the David Colegrave Foundation for their generosity. This scholarship means a lot to me as it will help me to pay for my college fees and invest in equipment that will allow me to pursue my horticultural interests further and expand my knowledge.”

As part of the DCF Scholarship Season, six students have received Student Scholarships and two Sponsored Scholarships were also awarded.

Jeff Colegrave, DCF Trustee, says, “This year’s Scholarship Season drew in applications from students studying at 19 colleges across the UK. Those awarded are all a great investment with interests that include pests and diseases, organic growing methods, sustainability, hydroponics, plant pathology and crop management.”

Over £57,000 worth of scholarships has been awarded in the past five years to students studying at 14 UK colleges. The next Scholarship Season runs from September 2017 to January 2018.

The David Colegrave Foundation (DCF) is a registered charity supporting the development of students studying horticulture in the UK. It champion careers in commercial, production or retail ornamental horticulture by offering scholarships to these future horticulturists.
