Hosepipe ban despite rain

DESPITE heavy rain the Department of Environment had issued stringent water restrictions in August 1983.

No significant rainfall was predicted and reservoirs were heavily depleted. Officials said the situation was 'increasingly serious'.

While the effort being made by the public to use water sparingly was appreciated the daily consumption level was still well above 'normal' and a hosepipe ban had been introduced.

If the dry weather was to persist then night-time restrictions could be implemented, an official added.
