She said: “Every year we depend on volunteers to help us fundraise, it is only with their help that we can tackle our enormous funding challenge.

“In 2015 we are looking at expanding our team of fundraising volunteers to help at our promotional stands, charity shops, events, flag days and weekly draw promotion.

“Your level of commitment can be as little as a couple of hours twice a year, or a morning each week. You do not need experience as we will provide all necessary training - all that is required is a desire to raise money to help those who need our help and to have fun doing it.”

Ms Williams explained that 2015 is a very important year for Foyle Hospice as it marks its 30th year providing specialist palliative care in the North West.

It is hard to imagine that prior to 1984 the region did not have this vital care provision.

The Community Specialist Nursing Team was established in that year. After years of determined fundraising spearheaded by Dr Tom McGinley a purpose built In-Patient Unit followed in 1991.

With further fundraising efforts supported by the local community the dream of a Day Hospice became a reality in 2001.

She said: “If fundraising does not appeal to you there are other ways to get involved. To find out more about how you can make a difference please call me on (028) 71 351 010.”
