Almost 120 riders took part in Sunday’s second Ladies Only Sportive in Londonderry, jointly organised by Foyle Cycling Club and the Foyle Hospice.

Clubs from all across Northern Ireland were represented, while the girls from the city turned out in large numbers to ride in both the 20-mile and 50-mile routes.

The Sportive also attracted a hen party from Causeway Cycling Club with Ballymoney woman Rachel Beringer’s participation adding a novel twist to her weekend away.

Evelyn Donelly, Sportive co-ordinator and co-owner of Iyengar Yoga Centre, said the event was a great success.

She said: “We increased our participation by almost 30% on last year’s numbers, and that was despite the weather warnings for strong winds and rain.”

She continued: “The Foyle Hospice is a great cause to support, and we now hope to build on this year’s Sportive for next year. Our aim is to have 250 people participating.”

The route took riders out of the Maiden City along the River Foyle into Donegal, through the villages of Carrigans, St Johnston and Raphoe.

For the shorter distance, the local dedicated greenway and off-road paths were used. Anyone wanting to donate to the Foyle Hospice should log on to www.foylehospice.com
