Along with traditional street collections, there were events as diverse as a diamond jubilee garden party, a golf day, coffee morning and quizzes.

Although the total raised this year is down slightly on last year, it is still a very commendable sum considering the difficult economic climate.

In her end-of-year report, secretary Roma Brown said: “To all our sponsors and loyal supporters, to everyone who has donated prizes and money over the past year, and to everyone who has attended our various events I would convey the thanks of all the group as we couldn’t do what we do without your constant help and backing.”

As well as bringing in much-needed funds for the Hospice, the Larne-based support group had its own special reason to celebrate this year - its 20th anniversary.

Mayor, Cllr Gerardine Mulvenna helped mark the occasion by extending an invitation to the group to the Mayor’s Parlour, which provided the opportunity to roll back the years to the support group’s early days.
