Housing Executive figures hide the true housing need in Rasharkin says Peacock

Local Sinn Féin Representative Leanne Peacock has stated that Housing Executive figures hide the real need for social housing in the Rasharkin area.

Ms Peacock said: ‘Housing Executive figures over the past number of years have stated that the housing need has dropped in the Ballymoney area which includes Rasharkin.’

“I believe that these figures do not accurately represent the housing need in the Rasharkin area. As a local person, I know that there are many people in Rasharkin with a need for quality, affordable social housing however issues such as a lengthy wait and poor quality social housing ensure that many are forced into private rent and many young people and indeed young families must continue living with parents or family for longer periods.

“It has become increasingly difficult in recent years for young people and young families to get onto the property ladder and with a lack of quality social housing young people are being forced to either move out of their locality or live at home well beyond the time when they wish to move out and make independent lives for themselves and their families.

“This is something that I feel needs to be addressed by the Housing Executive but I would encourage those who do require housing in Rasharkin to get themselves registered with the Housing Executive. ‘

“I will be meeting the Housing Executive to discuss these matters, as well as many others which have become apparent in the area in the next few days in conjunction with my colleague Daithí Mc Kay.”
